BMW have long been known for offering a variety of vehicles. Large SUVs for family duty and high-performance saloons and coupes for more spirited drivers.
Their range offers something for everyone but there are models that are more desirable and popular with buyers for both new and used cars. Here we’ll give you the top choices on the used market to help you make an informed decision.
BMW 1 Series
The 1 Series is a more recent addition to the BMW line-up, first appearing on our roads back in 2004. The idea was to offer buyers a conventional hatchback that could compete with rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.
The model was a success with thousands being sold meaning that you should be able to pick one up easily on the used market. The current 1 Series, known as the F20, is also BMW’s cheapest model and used car prices reflect this.
Luckily the 1 Series is still rear wheel drive meaning its more involving to drive than your average hatchback. The engines to look for here are the 120d diesel and 130i petrol models. The diesel offers a good combination of power and economy but the larger petrol engine is one of the best engines BMW has built in recent years.
BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series is the most common BMW on the roads today. Available as a 4 door saloon or as an estate (known as the Touring), the 3 Series is popular with fleet drivers and families alike.
The 3 Series model spanning the years 2011 to the present day, is known as the F30 platform. The F30 is available with a variety of different engines including the usual petrol and diesel models as well as more advanced hybrid models.
There is no bad engine in the range but we would suggest starting with the 318d rather than the 316d if going for a diesel. The 318d is just as economical on fuel but offers more performance making it a good choice for the cost conscious. Try and find one with the new 8 speed auto gearbox – it’s that good it will make you wonder how you put up with manuals for all these years.
BMW 5 Series
Still a saloon or estate, the 5 Series offers you much more over the 3 Series. The car is noticeably larger which results in an interior you could happily live in. The quality of materials used here is also much higher than either the 1 or 3 Series.
Best of all, the 5 Series is not that much more expensive than the 3 Series on the used market. Buyers seem to be put off by the size and potential running costs of this model, opting for a smaller one meaning the 5 Series is a bargain. The model spanning the years 2010 – 2017 is the F10.
Go for the 520d or 530d diesels with the 8 speed automatic gearbox for motoring nirvana.
The BMW For You
These 3 models are the most prevalent on the road. You can find second hand BMW cars for sale throughout West Yorkshire so don’t buy the first you come across. Make sure you test a drive a few of the models that you’re interested in to give you a feel for the car and the options available.
Whilst more expensive new, used BMWs offer great value on the used market so don’t think that you’re forced into buying a Vauxhall Vectra.
